Songs
Act 1
Welcome to Camp Winimungkuk Megamix (Ensemble)
Vacation by The Go-Gos
Walk Like an Egyptian by The Bangles
Walking on Sunshine by Katrina & the Waves
Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang Chung
All Night Long by Lionel Richie
Love Shack by The B-52s
All of the songs in this megamix were Top 10 Billboard hits for the artists, with Walk Like an Egyptian, All Night Long, and Love Shack all reaching #1 on the pop charts when they were released.
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by Eurythmics (Annie)
Although this is the first song that most people remember from Eurythmics, it was actually the fourth single released from their second album. All of the singles before this were never released in the US, but the record company saw the success it was having in the UK and sent it stateside. It hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in September, 1983.
I Want Your Sex by George Michael (Steve)
Considered shocking and provocative upon its release in 1987, the song by the former Wham frontman was banned on BBC radio during daytime hours and on countless radio stations in the US. Despite that, it reached #2 on the US Billboard chart and #3 in the UK. The singer reportedly didn’t like the song and never performed it again after concluding his world tour in 1989.
Janet Jackson Medley (Nancy)
Control
What Have You Done for Me Lately?
Miss You Much
Rhythm Nation
The first two songs in this medley of Janet Jackson’s hits were from the 1986 album Control. It ws her third album but the first to have any commercial success, with What Have You Done for Me Lately?, Nasty, When I Think of You, Control, and Pleasure Principal among its blockbuster singles. The lsat two songs are from the 1989 album Rhythm Nation 1814, which remains the ONLY album in the history of the US Billboard Hot 100 charts to have seven commercial singles peak within the top 5 positions including Miss You Much, Rhythm Nation, Escapade, Alright, Come Back to Me, Black Cat, and Love Will Never Do (Without You).
Blockbuster Commercial to the tune of Gloria by Laura Branigan (Joey & Heather)
Parody lyrics by Rick Garman who remember renting from Blockbuster so he’s allowed to do this because he’s old.
Like a Virgin by Madonna (Cindy)
This was Madonna’s first #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, released in October of 1984 but it was her performance of the song on the MTV Music Video Awards a few weeks earlier that established the singer as a pop-culture queen. She appeared in a wedding dress atop a 17-foot tall cake, then writhed on the floor with her dress riding up and her undergarments showing. Madonna later said it wasn’t intentional – her shoe had fallen off and she was reaching for it. Sure, Madonna. Whatever you say.
She’s a Beauty by The Tubes (Burt)
San Francisco based rock band The Tubes had been around in some form or another for nearly a decade before this song from their sixth studio album finally got them some chart success in 1983. It reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and became a staple on MTV. They never had another hit.
In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins (Marcie)
Phil Collins was best known as the lead singer and drummer for the rock band Genesis, taking over on the microphone after Peter Gabriel left in 1975. This was the lead single from Collins’ debut solo album and it went on to be one of his biggest hits. An urban legend persists that it is an autobiographical tale of Collins witnessing a drowning where someone was close enough to help but didn’t. Collins insists that it isn’t true and that he wrote the song after a painful divorce.
976-BUTT Commercial to the tune of 867-5309/Jenny by Tommy Tutone (Ashley & Amber)
Parody lyrics written by Rick Garman who was laughing too hard while he wrote it to feel ashamed about what he was doing.
I Want a New Drug by Huey Lewis and the News (Ted)
This was the second single from the band’s 1984 album Sports, a follow-up to their global smash hit Heart and Soul. It reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and topped the Dance Club Play chart. Later that year, Ray Parker Jr. released the title track to the movie Ghostbusters, which sounded so similar that Lewis sued for copyright infringement saying Parker had stolen the meldoy. The case was eventually settled out of court with a confidentiality agreement attached but ended up in another lawsuit in 2001 when Lewis discussed the terms of the settlement in an interview.
Sheila/Chaka Mashup (Pamela)
The Glamorous Life by Sheila E.
I Feel For You by Chaka Khan
Both of these songs were written by Prince. I Feel For You was a track on his eponymously titled 1979 album, but never released as a single. It was written for singer Patrice Rushen but she turned it down and later covered by The Pointer Sisters, Rebbie Jackson, and even Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake on The Mickey Mouse Club. Chaka Khan’s version was a huge hit, reaching #3 on the Billboard charts and winning 2 Grammy Awards. The Glamorous Life was only ever recorded by Prince as a demo (released in 2019), which he gave to one of his proteges, singer and percussionist Sheila Escovedo (later Sheila E.). She is the daughter of legendary percussionist Pete Escovedo, who performed with the band Santana.
Don’t Go Out There! Megamix (Ensemble)
I Ran (So Far Away) by Flock of Seagulls
Maniac by Michael Sembello
Don’t Stand So Close to Me by The Police
Dead Man’s Party by Oingo Boingo
I Think We’re Alone Now by Tiffany
Who Can It Be Now? by Men at Work
Cruel Summer by Bananarama
Somebody’s Watching Me by Rockwell
Really, the only thing these hits from the 1980s have in common is that they all have titles that make them sound like they were written for a 1980s horror movie, hence their inclusion in this megamix.
Act 2
We Are the Stabbed to the tune of We Are the World by USA for Africa (Ensemble)
Parody lyrics by Rick Garman who is very proud of the fact that he came up with rhymes for decapitated and disembowled.
NOTE: Songs from this point until noted are listed in alphabetical order, NOT in show order.
We have a good reason for this but you’ll just have to trust us.
Alone by Heart (Nancy)
This classic rock ballad was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, who wrote huge hits like Like a Virgin by Madonna, True Colors by Cyndi Lauper, So Emotional by Whitney Houston, and Eternal Flame by The Bangles. They recorded it under the band name I-Ten in 1983 but it wasn’t until Heart covered it in 1987 that it became an international hit, spending three weeks atop the US charts and hitting Top 10 status in countries around the world.
Bust a Move by Young MC (The Whore)
This top 10 hit from 1989 samples no fewer than four songs including Daytime Hustler by Bette Midler. It features bass guitar work by Flea of the band Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Culture Club Medley (Ted)
Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?
Church of the Poison Mind
Karma Chameleon
Culture Club was formed in 1981 with lead singer Boy George, who had performed vocals with the band Bow Wow Wow under the stage name Lieutenant Lush. The band’s name was originally the Sex Gang Children, but changed to Culture Club to recognize the ethnic, religious, and sexual orientation diversity of the members of the group.
Dare Me by The Pointer Sisters (Pamela)
The music video for this hit by The Pointer Sisters was filmed at the Main Street Gym in Los Angeles, which had been the shooting location for scenes from the film Raging Bull.
Duran Duran Medley (Steve)
View to a Kill
Hungry Like the Wolf
Rio
The Reflex
British band Duran Duran was formed in 1978, taking their name from the character Dr. Durand Durand in the film Barbarella. They had their first hit in 1981 with Girls on Film, but it was 1982’s Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf that cemented their superstart status. Their song View to a Kill is the only James Bond movie theme song to reach #1 on the Billboard charts. Take that Adele.
Every Breath You Take by The Police (Burt)
This was not only the biggest hit ever for The Police, the band’s only #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, it has been recognized by BMI as being the most played song in radio history with over 15 million plays as of 2019. Sting wrote it in Jamaica while sitting at the writing desk of author Ian Fleming of the James Bond series fame.
Just Say No to Drugs PSA to the tune of Tained Love by Soft Cell (Reggie & Mark)
Parody lyrics by Rick Garman who wasn’t on drugs when he wrote it, but may have been high on bacon.
Life Alert Commercial to the tune of Saving All My Love for You by Whitney Houston (Martha & Ruth)
Parody lyrics by Rick Garman who would stand to take a bow for this but he can’t get up.
Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi (Cindy)
The band’s signature song was recorded in 1986 but lead singer Jon Bon Jovi didn’t like and wanted to scrap it from the album they were working on. Bassist Richie Sambora convinced him it was worth saving and they reworked it with new bass and drum lines to turn it into the anthem we all know and love today.
Maneater by Hall & Oates (Annie)
Pop/soul duo Hall & Oates had their biggest hit with this song, which topped the US charts for four weeks in 1982. In interviews, John Oates has stated that the song is not about a woman but instead about New York City in the 1980s.
What’s Love Got to Do With It? by Tina Turner (Marcie)
It may be hard to believe, but this was Tina Turner’s first – and ONLY – single to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Released in 1984, it received three Grammy Awards including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
SHOW ORDER RESUMES
Killer/Survivor Megamix (Killer, Survivor)
Another One Bites the Dust by Queen
Eye of the Tiger by Survivor
King of Pain by The Police
I’m Still Standing by Elton John
Bad by Michael Jackson
Hurts so Good by John Mellencamp
Another collection of songs that have absolutely nothing in common other than all being from the 1980s and all sounding like things that could be sung by a killer and survivor in a horror movie.
9 to 5 by Dolly Parton (Ensemble)
This anthemic song was written and recorded by Dolly Parton in 1980 for the film of the same name starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly herself. It reached #1 on the Billboard charts and received an Academy Award nomination and four Grammy Award nominations, winning two – Best Country Song and Best Country Vocal Performance, Female.
