CONCEPT

An audience-driven murder mystery with Broadway songs.  A podcaster narrates (and participates in) the story about someone amongst the cast and crew of the Bay Street Cabaret who is murdered.

At the end of Act 1, the audience will vote on who gets killed, how they are killed, and who the killer is, which will result in Act 2 being different based upon those votes.

FULL SCRIPT

Murder at the Bay Street Cabaret – 8-8-22 – PDF (opens in a new window)

8/8/22 – Version Notes

  • Act 2, Scene 2A, Page 26 – new lines about the dead horse for Wesley
  • Act 2, Scene 2B, Page 28 – new lines about the dead horse for Wesley (same as above just in the B version)
  • Act 2, Scene 3A, Page 31 – New lines for Peggy and Betty if Peggy or Betty is dead.
  • Act 2, Scene 4A, Page 37 – Revised monologue for Mare – same thing just with the lines rearragned a bit.
  • Act 2, Scene 4B, Page 39 – New “dead Mare” version with minor changes in red.
  • Fixed a few other errors

Previous notes:

  • I encourage ad libbing, especially if you can think of something funnier
  • The first few pages have a character breakdown with all of your scenes and songs listed
  • Most scenes in the second act have 2 or 3 versions, depending on who the audience votes to be the murderer and who gets killed
  • Each is marked Version A: If <Character> is Alive, Version B: If <Character> is Dead; and so on
  • Focus on memorizing Version A – that is the most likely version since only one person will be “dead”
  • Everyone needs to learn the <MURDERER> lines of Act 2 Scene 10 along with the song, “What I Did For Love” (it’s only 2:20 long), but only one person will be doing it
  • The changes from Version A to Version B or C are marked in red and as you’ll see they are minimal – a line here or there.
  • In the Version B or C, you’ll see an add on at the end in red that is repeated in almost every subsequent Version B or C of every scene, although there are slight variations in some of them
  • We’ll know by the end of intermission who is dead and who the killer is and we’ll have a quick huddle that will go like this…
    • Scene #X will be Version B (because that character is dead) and everything else is version A
    • Scene #10, the <MURDERER> lines and “What I Did For Love” will be performed by (whomever)
  • This may seem complicated, but I promise it’ll be a lot easier than it looks
